Iceland - Day 2

Updated: Oct 1, 2022

Beginning on adventure of Southern Iceland we started the morning off at Seljalandsfoss waterfall located approximately 1 hour from last night's campground. It cost ~7 USD for parking. This waterfall has an amazing view, since it offers something most others don't. You are able to walk behind the waterfall.

My second favorite thing about this location, is the "secret" hidden waterfall that is a short hike from Seljalandsfoss. If you follow the trail to the left of the waterfall for about 10-15 minuets you will see a slip within the rock, enter here to find the hidden falls.

30 Min up the road leads to Skógafoss another walk-up waterfall similar to the last stop. One thing I regret during my trip is not spending the night at this campground location, who doesn't want to sleep next to an amazing waterfall. Another perk to this is you are here before the crowds an epic time to take amazing pictures.

10 minuets from the previous stop just off route 1 located on the right side of the road is a small parking lot. This is an amazing location for aviation lovers. The DC-3 crash is located on a black sand beach Sólheimasandur. This site is located 2 miles from the parking lot and can be hand to see at night, so do not attempt if you are not confident you will complete before dark. If you are trying to save time since this is a 3–4-hour journey out and back, there is a shuttle that can get you there in 15 minuets that operates throughout the year. See the link below:

30 Minuets up the road leads to the small town of Vik. This is considered a major town in Iceland it has ample places to eat and stay if you are taking on Iceland at a slower pace. Here is where the famous black sand beach can be found.

We stopped in the small cafe for some Hot Chocolate while the rain passed, and it was such a cute cafe if you want to have a small snack/ lunch prior to continuing the adventure. Please note this beach is extremely dangerous people have lost their lives, by standing in inches of water the current is extremely rough, so please stay back. This location was amazing.

Between the black sand (rocks), the stunning rock formation. This is one of the must-see locations of Iceland it is simply nothing you have ever seen before.

2.5 hours from the town of Vik was Diamond Beach. This is another black sand beach known for small chunks of icebergs being washed out to see and on the shore. This is located directly across the street from Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon.

Here we spend a large portion of the day hiking around the lagoon looking at the Icebergs, watching seals play, and just enjoying the true nature of Iceland. This was my favorite day spent in Iceland as it has so much to see that was simply amazing, I could live this day over and over again.

Here we backtracked 45 min to the Skaftafell Camping (one of my favorite campground in Iceland) the bathrooms and showers were so clean and the hot water was endless and amazing. This site cost us 25 USD a night. This is also a great ending point, for an easy starting point to the Skaftafell hike in the morning at the campground is located right next to the trail head.
